You may adjust this start date if your application is successful. We expect most Advancing Healthcare Small Grants to start within 1 year of the decision.

Section 3: Project Details

  1. the need for this project
  2. the key objectives

  4. the evaluation plans
  5. the plans to support or develop the project beyond this potential period of charitable funding.

Please ensure that this section of your application is fully referenced.

References may include clinical guidelines, NICE recommendations, as well as research papers. For advice/guidance regarding referencing, please see this resource.

Please note that if your application is not appropriately referenced it will be returned to you.

Guidance:

Please structure this section following the headings above. This is the main body of the application, most of the key information must be included here.

Your application will be read by a range of people including individuals who may not know the context of your application in detail. Please write your application with this in mind.

References, figures and any other supporting information referred to must be uploaded as attachments (on Page 9 of this form).

1. The need for this project

Describe the background to the project and how the need for intervention in this area has arisen. In this section, provide justification for the proposal, including details of any preliminary work and the current state of the field.

2. Key objectives

Clearly state what the proposal aims to achieve.

3. Work plan

Outline how you will achieve your aims. This should include the approach you will take, key activities, risks and contingency plans as well as estimated timelines (with reference to a Gantt chart, if appropriate).

4. Evaluation plans
Outline your plans to evaluate the impact of the proposed project, including how you will:
  • collect baseline data, if appropriate
  • monitor project progression
  • determine whether the aims have been achieved, and what the outcomes and benefits have been.
You should include details of specific and measurable criteria of success.

5. Maintainability
Provide details of how the proposed intervention might be introduced on a permanent basis or will lead to long-lasting impact. We understand these actions might be completed by another team.

Explain whether your project may lead to ongoing costs (revenue/non-revenue) after the period of the grant. If so, outline the potential sources of funding (Barts Health NHS Trust, Integrated Care Systems, NHSE/I, other charities etc) for these ongoing costs and your plans to submit a request for future support.

Project Benefit

  • evidence of how this figure has been derived
  • details of the population who will benefit (e.g. age, demographic profile, location or disease profile)
  • details of patients who may benefit within Barts Health NHS Trust specifically, if applicable.

Guidance: If possible, provide the number of patients/people that would benefit per year in the UK. Where this is not possible, please state the units that you have used.

Section 4: Additional questions

Involvement and Engagement
As a local funder, effective involvement and engagement of patients and the public in the work we fund is very important to us.

Patients and the public ideally should be involved and/or engaged in every stage of a project, from developing a proposal through project delivery to evaluation and dissemination.

More information and guidance around involving individuals in work to advance healthcare delivery has been developed by the NHS Accelerated Access Collaborative (AAC), a group who are committed to introducing proven innovations into clinical practice more rapidly. The ACC patient and public involvement strategy incorporates the guiding principles laid out in the NHS England guidance on patient and public participation in commissioning health and care and is available here.

We recommend reviewing this document before submitting your application.

Costs related to patient and public involvement and engagement within your project can be funded by this grant and should be detailed in the finance section of this application form.

Outputs Management Plan

Guidance: Project outputs are tangible materials generated as a direct result of project activity and may include, for example:

  • a framework outlining a new clinical pathway
  • data/datasets, software or physical materials
  • policy documents
  • patents
  • manuscripts/papers/poster presentations
  • training materials.

As a charity, we want to ensure that the outputs generated by the projects we fund have the largest possible impact. We expect applicants to consider whether the outputs of a project might be of value as a resource to others and, if so, to consider their approach to managing and sharing anticipated outputs in order to maximise their potential benefit.

Project Team and Management
Outline the role that each team member (including lead and co-applicants, collaborators and staff) will play in the delivery of the project. Include details of the role any governance or oversight committee(s) (e.g. a steering group) will have.

Guidance: If your project requires collaboration with individuals from organisations outside of Barts Health, QMUL or City you will be required to submit a letter of support from each collaborator (please use ‘Letters of Support’ upload button on Page 9).
Commercial Involvement

Guidance: If you will require involvement with a commercial organisation in order to realise your project aims, we advise you to seek guidance from the Barts Health NHS Trust commercial team.
Case for Charitable Support

Why is Barts Charity’s Advancing Healthcare scheme the best funding source for this proposal?  Your answer should include details of:

  • How the proposal meets scheme criteria of originality/creativity, including the extent to which your proposed intervention is currently available within the NHS.
  • Why the project is suitable for carrying out as a healthcare improvement, rather than research, project. Please see the HRA 'Is my study research?' tool for guidance regarding the circumstances in which a project should be considered research.
  • Other potential sources of funding which could be approached or have been approached.

Guidance:
  1. Please refer to the scheme webpage and our Cost Policy for details of what this scheme can and cannot support.
  2. Include details of whether this or a similar application or business case has been considered by another organisation recently. If your application for funding was unsuccessful, outline the reasons for this decision and any changes you have made to this proposal.
